Un tome qui m'a bien plu. Miss Seeton arrêtée et soupçonnée, c'est une première!

Plummergen village folk are keen as mustard to beat neighboring Murreystone and win the Best Kept Village competition. Art teacher Miss Seeton is asked to create some Before and After pictures, showing residents of The Street how to improve the look of their houses. Yet one of her sketches is worrying, showing her own cottage, Sweetbriars, amidst billowing smoke, all too reminiscent of the current spate of murderous arson being investigated. Then another, that looks at first like a cosy Wind in the Willows scene seems to hint at something very dark lurking in the shadows . . .

When the Battling Brolly tries to help the police by creating some of her famous sketches she seems to hint at a connection between the gangs – but what? If only Chief Superintendent Delphick can work out the subconscious clue behind Miss Ess’s cryptic cartoons.

Avec Hamilton Crane, on retrouve la Miss Seeton d'origine (d'Heron Carvic).  Par contre j'ai plus de mal à comprendre son anglais.  Je n'ai pas saisi toutes les détails, mais l'histoire m'a plu.

Miss Seeton joue un rôle très secondaire dans ce tome, bien qu'elle ait tout compris et dessiné, comme à son habitude.  

Advantage, Miss Seeton

Miss Seeton's summer outing to a tennis match serves up more than expected when Britain's up-and-coming female tennis star is hounded by death threats. The girl's father, stern Judge Thumper, seems to have provoked one of the miscreants passing before his bench -- and the target of the ex-convict's wrath is the athletic Miss Thumper. The police are counting on Miss Seeton to unravel some baffling clues before victory goes to the villain ... game, set, and match.

On sent bien le changement d'auteur dans cet ouvrage, et si mes souvenirs sont bons, dans les suivants écrits par Hampton Charles.  On s'éloigne de l'univers "so british" un peu désuet, avec son style propre.  Ce ne doit pas être évident de reprendre ainsi la plume d'un autre... mais était-il nécessaire d'ajouter des scènes qui - si elles ne sont pas décrites - sont annoncées ou suggérées de façon plutôt crue.

Miss Seeton is a retired, often bemuddled British art teacher with a slight psychic ability for drawing things more accurately than they appear. Picture Miss Seeton, the first in the series, is an absorbing novel in which an elderly and naive drawing mistress, finds herself suddenly involved in the baser side of life, becoming embroiled in a murder and its subsequent mayhem.

Je l'avais lu en français il y a sans doute bien une quinzaine d'années, je me souvenais avoir aimé et lu tous les tomes disponibles en français, mais pas que c'était si humoristique.  Peut-être est-ce encore plus savoureux en version originale, en tout cas j'ai adoré et ai déjà commencé le deuxième.

Miss Seeton est l'héroïne d'une série de romans policiers humoristiques, écrits par trois écrivains différents. Créée par Heron Carvic en 1968, elle vit sous cette plume cinq aventures jusqu'en 1975. En 1990, les aventures de Miss Seeton sont reprises par Roy Peter Martin (alias James Melville), sous le pseudonyme de Hampton Charles pour trois romans, puis, de 1991 à 1999, parSarah J. Mason, sous le pseudonyme de Hamilton Crane (les initiales H et C étant conservées en hommage à Heron Carvic). 

Professeur de dessin à la retraite, célibataire, Miss Emily D. Seeton s'est retirée dans le village de Plummergen où elle possède un petit cottage. Elle « ne tricote pas, jardine peu, mais pratique le yoga »1.
Dans le premier tome de ses aventures, elle se découvre une sorte de don parapsychologique : certains de ses dessins, correctement inteprétés, permettent la résolution d'affaires policières que lui soumettent l'inspecteur Delphick et son assistant Bob Ranger. En raison de ce don, Miss Seeton « est engagée par Scotland Yard en tant qu'artiste et rémunérée à ce titre. Cette minuscule vieille dame, souple comme un roseau, a le don de se retrouver dans les plus étranges situations »1, mêlée à des affaires criminelles qu'elle affronte armée d'une grande naïveté (elle comprend rarement ce qui se passe autour d'elle, dans la mesure où elle ne conçoit pas que l'on puisse agir autrement que selon les convenances, la discrétion, la retenue) qui la fait souvent agir de manière incompréhensible par les criminels qu'elle croise.
Comme, après quelques affaires, elle est précédée d'une réputation de justicière invincible (elle est surnommée «Le pébroc vengeur» à cause de son inséparable parapluie, qui lui sert parfois de moyen de défense), les criminels sont persuadés qu'elle joue avec leurs nerfs, et finissent par causer leur propre perte sous l'œil toujours étonné de Miss Seeton elle-même.
